Each year the Committee on Pay Equity calculates the day in the current year when the average working woman earns as much as the average working man did in the previous calendar year.  This day is known as Equal Pay Day.  This year it is March 14.  The good news is that it is moving earlier in the year each year but it is still too far into the year, indicating that women's pay lags men's.  Furthermore, when one delves into the data, we find that women of color have a much later equal pay day.

This year BPW/FL is partnering with the Department of Labor's Women's Bureau to discuss the causes of pay inequity, the impacts and the  remedies.  Specifically the Women's Bureau participants will highlight details in the data and in recent studies and provide working women's stories highlighting issues around occupational segregation and childcare, which will be followed by a panel featuring Florida based organizations highlighting work being done to support higher wages for women.

Marlaina Guillaume serves as the acting Southeast Regional Administrator for the U.S. Department of Labor, Women’s Bureau. As an acting regional administrator, Marlaina works with community-based stakeholders, local government officials, and federal partners to advance policies that support the lives of working women and working families throughout the southeast. Marlaina’s experience includes implementing community outreach and engagement strategies to support building pipelines for marginalized women workers, advancing female outreach and recruitment efforts in nontraditional occupation training programs, and preventing discrimination.

Sonya Black is a Program Analyst in the Southeast Regional Office of the U.S. Department of Labor's Women’s Bureau.

Panelists will be identified on the BPW/FL website as they become known.
